Early Tuesday morning, a vehicle was stolen from a local car dealership in Kansas City.
As soon as the police were notified that the vehicle had been stolen and it was equipped with a GPS navigation system, they jumped into action.
Police used the vehicle’s GPS navigation system to track down the stolen vehicle, parked at a local residence.
Police showed up at the residence Tuesday morning about 10:30 a.m. to investigate if the stolen vehicle was located there. Investigators said they believed the stolen vehicle was parked inside the garage of the residence.
Once there, detectives spoke by phone with someone in the home but were they were not allowed inside. Officers then surrounded the house and waited for a search warrant.
Five persons were taken into custody without incident following a brief standoff, reported the Kansas City Star. Detectives were interviewing the occupants but no one has yet been charged, police said on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), a car is stolen every 26 seconds in America. Nearly half of these are never recovered, and are commonly scrapped for parts or smuggled to another country.
The NICB says a vehicle tracking system is “very effective” in helping police recover stolen vehicles.
With possible reductions in insurance premiums, plus a reduction in fuel costs, a vehicle tracking system can pay for itself over time.
