GPS Tracking Devices Hidden on Financed Vehicles

More and more car dealerships are stashing GPS tracking devices on financed cars to track the vehicle. A man who removes the devices, often found under the driver compartment, estimates 70 percent of dealerships are hiding trackers in cars.

Although consumers bristle at the privacy infringement, car dealers see it as a benefit to both sides. The cars equipped with the trackers are often sold to customers who have had credit problems in the past. With a GPS tracker on the car, the bank can locate the vehicle and disable it if the buyer is negligent with payment. However, many see it as a way for banks to take advantage of buyers.

Phoenix Police are unaware of any laws prohibiting car dealers from hiding the GPS devices or people from disabling them.
