GM, AT&T Team-up to Launch Fleet of LTE-enabled Cars

Summer 2014 will see a new fleet of cars emerge from GM: ones equipped with LTE, a new app platform, and an in-car modem–meaning all data will come from the car itself rather than users needing to pair the car with a phone.

The app platform, a joint venture between GM and OnStar, a subscription auto safety and GPS Navigation program, will offer a handful of popular apps like Weather Channel, iHeartRadio, and NPR. Additionally, it will include a Vehicle Health app that keeps drivers in tune with their automobile and allows them to set appointments at a local dealership.

It’s likely users will have to pay additional data fees or signup for a separate data plan, although neither AT&T nor GM have commented on pricing.
