Garmin Launches New Turn-By-Turn GPS Navigation App for iPhone

Garmin iPhone GPS NavigationGarmin just released a new GPS navigation App for the iPhone called Garmin StreetPilot. Garmin StreetPilot App gives iPhone users an intuitive Garmin interface for everyday navigation– without tapping into your dataplan. The Garmin StreetPilot App offers mapping, free real time speed camera alerts, traffic avoidance options and a host of other options for efficient routing, simple effortless planning and stress-free travel whether driving or on foot.

The Garmin (NASDAQ: GRMN) Street Pilot App has advanced navigation features such as Garmin’s exclusive PhotoReal junction view , lane guidance, 3D buildings, trip planner, trip computer, Garmin’s “Where Am I?” safety feature and free real-time speed camera information including the location of temporary mobile cameras, based on real-time feedback from the ‘Speedwatch’ community.

With ultra-fast map drawing, panning and zooming, the preloaded maps and Points of Interest offer coverage even when there is little or no mobile signal available. So just as with a Garmin Nüvi, the maps and directions are always there when you need them most – especially when you can’t get cell or Wi-Fi signals or your dataplan is running low.

Earlier this year, major GPS navigation firm Garmin launched its first turn-by-turn navigation app for iOS. But rather than having all map data included within the application, Garmin StreetPilot relied on data access to download maps as needed. Garmin touted the decision as offering smaller and quicker downloads with the most up-to-date mapping data, but it also required users to tap into their data plan to use the application and could result in poor navigation in areas of poor or no cell coverage.

Creating new, advanced, user-friendly GPS navigation apps is a smart move for Garmin, since the demand for personal navigation devices has been decreasing in recent years. More and more consumers are using their GPS-enabled mobile phones rather than purchasing and transporting a separate navigation device. According to market research firm IHS iSuppli, more than 135 million navigation-enabled smartphones to be sold this year, while such phones already in use will almost double to 269 million by 2013.

Three versions of StreetPilot Onboard are available:

– Garmin USA ($39.99): Lower 49 states plus a number of Caribbean islands
–  Garmin North America ($49.99): United States, Canada, Mexico, and a number of Caribbean islands
– Garmin UK and Ireland (£44.99): Full maps of Great Britain, Isle of Man, and Channel Islands, with coverage of major cities in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
